Fresh from their CAF Confederation Cup duties in Zambia, Ernst Middendorp opted to leave Khama Billiat on the bench as Bernard Parker resumed his spot in the line-up.

Billiat’s looked to have no big effect on Chiefs as they went ahead inside the first minute. Leonardo Castro did well to smother Siyabonga Mbatha’s clearance before seeing his strike deflect off both posts and Marc van Heerden.

Usuthu, meanwhile responded well to going behind as the likes of Emiliano Tade and Siyethemba Sithebe did well to trouble the Chiefs defence on a few occasions.

Castro went close to doubling Chiefs’ advantage six minutes before the halftime break, but his curling effort from distance was impressively tipped away by Mbatha.

Cavin Johnson’s men did show a bit of fight in the closing stages of the half, but they were unable to trouble Chiefs’ goalkeeper Virgil Vries, who enjoyed a quiet opening 45 minutes.

The second half did not start as positive as the first for the visitors, who were forced into a change after 54 minutes when Lebohang Manyama had to be replaced by Kabelo Mahlasela.

Six minutes later, Usuthu were level as the influential Tade broke into the box before picking out former Chiefs winger Ovidy Karuru, who had the simple task of slotting into an empty net.

Chiefs did not have to wait long for to restore their lead as Bernard Parker reacted quickest to a loose ball and sent a superb strike into the roof of the net two minutes later.

Middendorp was forced into another change with 15 minutes remaining, with Castro making way for Billiat as the injury list continues to grow.

Chiefs sealed the win three minutes later as Mario Booysen’s shot deflected into the path of Katsande, who buried the ball home from six-yards out.

Van Heerden pulled another goal back for Usuthu in second-half stoppage time, but the men from Soweto held on for three points.
